Ways to Serve

Windsor Heights Lutheran Church has a strong commitment to sharing what God has given us, both locally and globally. This commitment is expressed in a variety of ways, as a congregation and in the individual lives of people.  Consider the variety of ways you can serve God's people!

  • Consider joining a ministry committee. Much of Windsor Heights Lutheran Church's ministry lies in the hands of committees. These groups empower the people of our congregation to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ through service and mission.

  • Serving Supper at Central Iowa Shelter and Services - Click here for the more information

  • Assist with the Interfaith Hospitality Network (housing homeless families in the church facility four times a year)

  • Sit with and host Mosaic resident at Saturday's 5:30 pm and Sunday's 10:45 am services every 4-6 weeks.

  • Deliver food collected at Windsor Heights Lutheran Church to the DMARC Food Pantry or to a local shelter. Please make sure food items have not expired. DMARC Food Pantry needs include: canned fruit (15 oz), canned meat, canned vegetables (15 oz), diapers, infant formula, mac and cheese dinner, egg noodles, peanut butter, saltines, tomato sauce, canned meals (chili, stew, etc.), canned soups (NO Ramen noodles), cereal (hot/cold), fruit/vegetable juices, instant potatoes, mac/spaghetti, packaged dinners (Helpers, etc.), rice (1-2 lb. bags), spaghetti sauce (canned), tuna.

  • Habitat for Humanity organizes work crews and raises funds to build homes for people with low incomes. WHLC members have joined workers from around the area to construct homes in the Des Moines area! For more information, please check out the Habitat for Humanity web site.

  • Home Together is the combined effort of Lutheran congregations of Conferences 10 and 11 (the greater Des Moines Area), to refresh two residences that house families who are homeless:  the St. Joseph Emergency Family Center and the St. Paul AME Transformational Center. The ELCA congregations will be providing through gifts, grants, offerings, and volunteer labor and materials what is needed to prepare these facilities: painting, floor coverings, wiring, and needed appliances. Find out how to get involved!

Coffee With A Conscience

Coffee and Lutherans go together!  Coffee is often present in our Christian fellowship and is also big business.  Yet for the majority of coffee farmers the benefits are small.  They often struggle just to make a simple living.

But through the Lutheran World Relief Coffee Project farmers benefit from fair trade and earn a better price for their top-quality products.  This allows millions of people around the world to stay on their land, put food on the table, and keep kids in school.  Fair trade farmers are also careful stewards of the environment.

Pour a cup of justice for small-scale coffee farmers and purchase a 12 oz. package of regular ($6.50) and/or flavored ($7.00) coffee. Packages are available for purchase in the narthex before, after and between services.
